International storytelling festival 2008 at Alden Biesen.
Hilde Delsupehe about the International storytelling festival 2008 at Alden Biesen.
The organizers of the festival informed me months in advance; I suppose my name is well known there because it isn’t the first time that I assemble a group of students for this “story” evening. But this time it was different: because of my illness I couldn’t do it alone. So I am full of praise for Rita who did everything possible to assemble the class. Thanks Rita !!
You could hardly imagine a more beautiful « décor » than a castle like Alden Biesen to enjoy stories of all kind. And, particulary to me, the presence of all my classmates was a real delight… The large room was full to bursting and it was possible to drink some beer or wine. Ambiance ensured! Our first narrator was Ben Haggarty. Immediately a bull’s-eye! He is very sympathetic and internationally respected for his lively performances and for his knowledge of stories and diverse narrative traditions. He is a real master of improvisation. I read somewhere that he has a working repertoire of over 250 folktales, wonder tales, epics and myths, which he tells to all kinds of audience.
He told us a story about a poor boy who had lost his mother the day before. On her deathbed she gave him a last advice: “Always do unto others as you would they should do unto you…”He decides to leave his home to see the world. The following day he meets the devil who is touched by the goodwill of the boy and who promises him fortune and happiness. But, 12 years later, he will come back and ask him some questions: when the boy can’t give a good answer, he will lose everything…A masterstroke by Ben Haggarty: it was the audience who had to answer. He created a conversation with us, a really interesting improvisation, very funny!
David Ambrose was the second storyteller. He tells traditional tales coming from Wales (his mother’s country) in a dynamic style linked to a lively use of English language. David has been at the forefront of the storytelling revival in Wales for the past 15 years. He likes to speak about the mists of Celtic Britain. The story he told us is an ancient legend of Llyn Y Fan Fach (Welsh, meaning Lake of the small beacon-hill). This lake is located in the eastern border of the Black Mountain in Carmarthenshire. In the legend, a local young man, son of a widow agreed to marry a beautiful girl who rose from the lake, on the condition that he would not hit her three times. He accepted because the girl was so beautiful, and they were happy for years putting up a house and bringing up a family. The girl had very special cattle and other animals. But over time the man hit his wife three times and she had to go back to the lake according to the promise…The story continues but I will not tell the rest….
The next storyteller was Nick Hennessy. He is 35 years old and although he was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, it was in Alderley Edge, about 10 miles south of Manchester that he passed his childhood. It was Alderley’s legends – of a man, a sleeping king and of a mysterious guide who leads the way through Iron Gates deep into the heart of the hill – that made the most profound impression on him. But his first true love was music. Now, as a full-time performer, whether singing or speaking, he recognises the power of the word on the air. The spoken word is a force of nature. Whatever it touches, it transforms.
His story is about a farmer who wanted to hitch up the plough once more (it was early in the year) and turn the earth anew. When he opened the door of the barn there was a loud squawk: a stork attacked him and the farmer took his knife and hurled it at the bird. But the stork picked it up and took to the air. A strange thing happened: a restlessness arose in the farmer’s heart. He said to his wife:” I know I can’t stay here, I must set to the road” So he bid farewell to his wife and children and began a long trip… (To be continued…) There was a short pause and after that our three storytellers went on… It was a very, very interesting evening. We are already looking forward to the next year. And what can I say more? The absent are always in the wrong….

The Teapot Story
The teapot story
Once there was a young woman who lived in a very small town, and as all young women she wanted more from life than her parents thought would be good for her.
And so it happened that one day she came home with something that young women of that time and of that village weren't supposed to come home with. But as she was different of the rest she didn't care, she left her parents’ house and looked for some place where she could live her life in peace. She found work and all the coming years she worked very hard to take care of her beloved son. She never got any help from anybody and with the passing of the years she had to work harder and harder because, as we all know, raising a child costs a lot of money. But she loved her son very much and he was a good boy. She always motivated him to study well and hard so that he could have a better and easier life later. And the son studied hard and as he was very intelligent, he always was the best pupil of the school. His mother was really very proud of him. And so it happened that the little boy became a young man and because of his excellent degrees he received a scholarship to go to university in another town far away.
His mother was so very proud of him. Now she knew that all her working and suffering hadn't been in vain. But as the day of his departure came closer and closer she became more and more afraid. All these years she had only lived for him, all her thoughts and energy and all her love had their beginning and ending in her beloved son.
But as her love for him was so great she didn't say anything of all this to her son. And on that particular morning in October she accompanied him to the bus. And her good son said: ‘don’t worry mom I will write to you every day, or at least every week and when I am able I will come home as often as possible. And so the bus left and she went home and she cried the whole day. For the son a new life started, until then he had only lived with his mother in his little town and as they didn't have much money to spend on trips and things like that he hadn't seen much of the world nor of the girls that inhabited this beautiful world. And the son discovered that he liked all this beauty of the world and of the girls and that the girls liked him.
So he started learning new things, things you can't learn in school nor at university. And he learned to know this particular girl better and better, she also lived in the same building as he had his room in. And life was beautiful and time went by. The first week, the second week the third week, the first month, and all this time he hadn't even thought of his mother.
But then one day the telephone rang in the building he was living in and his girl friend picked it up. It was his mother and she wanted to talk to him. "'Hello son, I hope you are fine, I called the school to find out the address and telephone number of the place you are living in, as I didn't hear from you.'' “Oh mum'', the son said, '' you see, time flies here and I have met so many new people, I'm sorry really, but I didn't realize that I was already here for so long.''
''And who was that young woman who picked up the telephone son?'' his mother asked. '' O just a friend who also lives here, nobody special. “ "Well son I am coming to visit you next week by bus,'' his mother said . Silence on the other side of the phone....'' Well mum that is very nice of you, until next week then.''
The next weekend his mother came. They sat together and they had tea and biscuits and the young girl had tea and biscuits together with them. And his mother asked again what this young woman was doing here with him and he told his mother not to worry, she was just a friend, it was not what his mother thought it was. She was just a friend who lived here in the same house, she had her own room just as he had his own room.
So the mother stayed the whole weekend and she talked with her son and she talked with the girl. And they had more tea and more biscuits together. And on Sunday she took the bus home and her son said again to his mother not to worry, that the girl was not what she thought it was and he promised his mother to write to her very soon.
Two days later his girlfriend, who had very rich parents, came and told him that her very expensive silver teapot was missing since the day his mother visited them and she told him to write to his mother and to ask her if she hadn't taken it with her (by mistake of course) as the mother was very poor and the teapot was worth a lot of money. So it happened that the boy kept his promise to write his mother very soon. And he wrote her this letter.
''Dearest mother, it was very nice seeing you this weekend, and as you see I'm already writing you. Could you please check your handbag If perhaps, by any coincidence, the teapot of the young woman you met here with me, could have fallen from the table into your bag. Don't misunderstand me mother, I 'm not saying you have taken it, but you never know, perhaps it may have seen the chance to slip into you handbag, without telling you of course, you know how beautiful teapots can behave don't you. Really, I'm not saying you have stolen it, but maybe you just took it by mistake thinking it was yours. Dear mother could please write me back very soon as it is a very expensive teapot and as the matter is very important to me. Your son.
And two days later the son received a letter from his mother. ''Dearest son, I was really very pleased to receive your letter last week, I knew you hadn't forgotten me. And as you told me last week things aren't always as we think they are or as it seems they are and therefore you shouldn't misunderstand me now.
I'm not saying that what you have with this girl is as it may seem to me. And I'm not saying that she isn't sleeping in her own bed. And of course I'm not saying that she is sleeping with you or that you are sleeping with her. The only thing I can say is that the girl would have found her teapot already a week ago if she had slept in her own bed. With love, your mother.''

Turkse Avond 2008

Turkse Avond
• grilgerechten: kip- of vleesbrochettes, köfte (Turkse gehaktballetjes), Adana kebab.
• ovengerechten: Turkse pizza’s, stoofpotjes e.a.
• versgemaakte broodsoorten
Dat was even smullen. Het was zeer lekker.
Rond 22:30 uur … de show begon …
